MIMRA
Mimra (2005) explores the invisible connections between three generations of women, reflecting on memory, secrecy, and the unspoken experiences that are carried across generations.
The video unfolds within the enclosed atmosphere of a hotel, where three women inhabit separate spaces immersed in an intense blue light. This monochromatic environment becomes a metaphorical bubble — an intimate, self-contained world in which personal histories, memories, and unspoken knowledge are preserved.
Through a sequence of fragmented, seemingly ordinary gestures, the women reveal different aspects of their private lives. A young girl sleeps, a young woman paints her fingernails, and an elderly woman prepares for prayer. Their actions are connected through recurring images of hands, objects, and moments of anticipation.
At the centre of the narrative is a small cloth bundle carried by the elderly woman. She leaves the hotel and places it at a bus stop, where a public telephone rings unanswered. After a brief pause, she retrieves the bundle and returns to the hotel, where she opens it and begins to pray.
The bundle becomes a symbolic vessel for what is carried, concealed, and potentially passed on between generations. Its temporary journey beyond the enclosed blue environment suggests the possibility of releasing something from the private sphere into the outside world, only for it to return to its place of origin.
Rather than following a conventional narrative, Mimra moves between gestures, spaces, and generations, allowing connections to emerge through repetition and visual association.
The work reflects on the fragile boundaries between private and public life, between what is inherited and what remains unspoken, and between the desire to communicate and the impossibility of fully revealing one's inner world.
